School District going green with next bus purchase

School District 22 may be firing up the ignition to cleaner transportation.

Last Wednesday, the Board of Education voted to explore purchasing an electric bus.

The motion to consider an electric powered school bus was put forward by Trustee Jenn Comazzetto, who argued supporting an electric powered school bus would not only be positive for the environment but set an example for students.

“It lets them know that we are being climate minded. We do have students that have been out on strike for climate change. They are still planning on doing those as well, and this would be a statement to them that we are listening, we do take the climate seriously,” Comazzetto said.

She also pointed out that despite the initial $300,000 sticker shock of purchasing an electric bus there are several subsidies available to bring the costs down.

“I’ve done some research into the subsidies and what is available and between the provincial and federal governments. There are about $53,000 in subsidies available,” Comazzetto said adding the electric bus investment could bring ‘substantial savings’ to the board throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.

The newly passed motion means school board staff will now explore partnership opportunities with local municipalities and other districts. Funds will also be allocated in savings for the electric bus.
