Business owner assaulted, store damaged

One person is in custody, and a store is significantly damaged after a downtown Vernon business owner was assaulted Friday, Sept. 20.

Police were called just before 11 a.m. for a report of an assault and mischief in progress at a downtown Vernon business located in the 3200 block of 30th Ave.

When police arrived, two bystanders were restraining the female suspect to the ground.

According to witness accounts, the female was told to leave her bags at the front of the store for security reasons and an exchange resulted in an assault against an employee.

“This incident, although isolated, is one that no business owner wants to be faced with,” RCMP Const. Kelly Brett said. Police believe the female suspect may have been under the influence of an unknown substance, given her erratic behaviour, which continued while in police custody.

The RCMP would like to commend the Good Samaritans that came to the aid of the store owner at the time of the incident, as their efforts aided in keeping the female suspect under control until police arrived on scene,” Brett said.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jayleen Fuller, of no fixed address, faces a number of potential charges, including assault and mischief. She was held in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on a future date.
