Strong start not enough to carry Heat to victory

It was the same score as Friday night, but the result was a loss for UBCO on Saturday.

In the backend of the Heat men’s soccer team’s back-to-back matches against the visiting UNBC Timberwolves, it was the home squad on the losing end of the same 2-1 scoreline.

UNBC scored two second-half goals to cap off their comeback win.

It was T-Wolves’ forward Michael Henmen who put home the game-winner at the 83rd minute. He worked behind the Heat’s defence and placed the ball over UBCO’s keeper Nicholas Reitsma.

The home team, victorious on Friday night, found themselves in the lead again early at the Nonis Sports Field on Saturday.

The Heat struck first as a deflected ball fell to the feet of Sam McDonald in the 27th minute, who made no mistake burying his second of the season to put UBCO up 1-0.

A second-half sub, at the 68th minute, for UNBC paid dividends for the visiting side. Just two minutes after entering the contest, Alex Nielsen evened the game for the Timberwolves as he slid the ball past Reitsma’s right side.

The Heat were not for a loss of chances to even it up over the final 10 minutes. After subbing in the 70th minute Jimmy Steel was a force. He had two solid chances in a short span, one off the post from within the box and another wide right on a 22-yard attempt.

A solid strike off of the right foot of McDonald slipped pass UNBC keeper Rob Goodey, but the rebound was stopped by a T-wolves’ defender on the goal line.

The UBCO flurry continued until the final whistle blew with the score settling, once again, in a 2-1 final, sending the Heat to their first loss of the season.

With the weekend split, the Heat (1W-1L-0T) will continue their early-season homestand. Next up for UBCO will be Victoria (Aug. 31) and UBC (Sept. 1) on the Labour Day weekend in Kelowna, with both matches at 3 p.m. PDT.

The Timberwolves (1W-1L-0T) will return home for two matches against the UFV Cascades. First, on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. and then on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. PDT.
