Survey out in September

Time for change at Armstrong City Hall

It’s an historic building but it is also showing signs of age.

Armstrong city council has directed staff to gauge community sentiment for a new city hall.

A survey will be sent out in early September, asking residents how they feel about a new city hall and what kind of elements it should contain.

In May, a celebration was held to mark the building’s centennial.

“We had an open house in Armstrong a couple of months ago, just to show people our over-100-year-old city hall and the problems we have with it,” Mayor Chris Pieper said. “The building has provided a great service to our community for the last 100 years but we have to look to the future.”

Pieper said council wants to start planning for a new city hall but wants to hear from the public first.

“We had a public input session on cannabis here in the last six months and that turned out to be extremely successful and then we had a lot of people come forward with their thoughts. We want to do something similar for city hall before we get into very much detail.”

Pieper said the community will be asked for input on public amenities that could go into a new city hall building.

The survey will likely be mailed to residents and go online next month, the mayor said.
