Two fatal crashes in Kelowna

Kelowna RCMP are seeking witnesses in two separate fatal crashes in the city within hours.

RCMP have confirmed the death of a cyclist who was struck by a semi tractor trailer unit near Dilworth Drive and Harvey Avenue on Monday.

“The cyclist, a 69-year-old Kelowna resident was transported to hospital,” Cpl. Meghan Foster of the Kelowna RCMP said. “Efforts to save the cyclist’s life were made but sadly he has succumbed to his injuries.”

Foster said the driver of the semi was cooperating and there was no one in custody at this time.

Officers have been canvassing the surrounding area of the scene for video surveillance and other evidence and are appealing for witnesses.

The name of the cyclist was not released.

Meanwhile, a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Harvey Avenue and Cooper Road claimed the life of a Burnaby man.

Officers responded to the scene at 12:45 a.m.

“When officers arrived, they discovered a Cadillac SUV had been travelling eastbound on Harvey Avenue and collided with a Honda Accord travelling northbound on Cooper Road,” Foster said in a press release. “The driver of the Honda Accord, a 30-year-old male from Burnaby, was transported by the BC Ambulance Service to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The other driver sustained minor injuries, Foster said.

The scene of the crash was closed for several hours for processing.

“While it is early in the investigation, drugs and alcohol are not factors in this crash,” Foster said. “A woman who spoke with the responding paramedics, identified herself as a witness to the crash.

“To advance this investigation, officers would like this woman to contact the Kelowna RCMP.”
