Victims from Osoyoos Lake crash recovered

Jun 10, 2019 | 10:23 AM

The bodies of two boaters who were missing after a two-boat crash on Osoyoos Lake, have been recovered by police.

“On June 9, 2019 shortly after 7 p.m. the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team located and recovered the bodies of a 35-year-old man from Kamloops and a 36-year-old man of Maple Ridge, B.C., from Osoyoos Lake,” RCMP Sgt. Jason Bayda, Area Commander of the Osoyoos Detachment, said.

An eyewitness on the shore called the crash Saturday evening “horrific” in speaking with Global News, saying a power boat hit an aluminum fishing boat with three men on board, at high speed before both boats sank.

Bayda said police remain at the scene in an effort to raise both boats from the bottom of the lake.

“The investigation into the cause of this collision is ongoing,” he said.

RCMP in the South Okanagan community are being assisted by RCMP marine analysts who specialize in investigating marine collisions.

“The Osoyoos RCMP are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or the boats prior to the collision, or anyone who may have security cameras or other video recording devices that overlook the lake, to call 250-495-7236,” Bayda added.
