Idea generates positive feedback

Naloxone training on oranges

Jun 8, 2019 | 6:10 AM

It is an idea that could catch on in other areas.

Attendees of the Uptown Rutland Business Association’s June After Hours event became more prepared to help combat the opioid overdose crisis.

For the first time at the event, free Naloxone training was offered by The Bridge Youth and Family Services members with about half the 85 attendees taking part in the training session and leaving with their own Naloxone kit.

The guests learned how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and received hands on practice of how to properly use Naloxone while awaiting emergency responders. They practiced on the evening’s patients: navel oranges.

“If I can do it, anybody can,” one attendee said.

“I’m terrified of needles, but I was able to do it,” echoed another.

Feedback about including Naloxone training at the event was incredibly positive.

Several people made a point of taking to social media in support and URBA has received requests by people unable to attend to participate in future training and pick up their own Naloxone kits.

Over 110,000 Naloxone kits have been distributed at over 1,400 participating sites, including The Bridge, through the B.C. Take Home Naloxone program since 2012.

The Bridge hosts free monthly Naloxone training sessions, the next one is on June 13 at 12 p.m.
