Bike to work week going strong

May 31, 2019 | 6:02 PM

More people have been handing over their keys and putting their foot to the pedal for Bike to Work Week.

The City of Vernon says participation for this year’s event has been fairly strong.

” We’ve had excellent participation, and we have had some new and exciting events, so it is great to see some new faces and old faces out at our celebration station,” said Angela Broadbent, active transportation coordinator for the City of Vernon.

Official numbers won’t be released until next week, but Broadbendt says people of all ages are taking part.

“We’ve had little kids in bike strollers with their parents, we’ve had retiree’s come out on their bikes and their electric bikes, so it has been great to see people from all different walks of life and all different ages in our community riding on their bikes.”

She says that cyclist culture is important to promote because it helps reduce the carbon footprint , and helps with the well-being of citizens.

“It’s a sustainable form of transportation, and so when we are promoting cycling as a community we are promoting a shift to greener transportation. It’s also very healthy, and a great low-impact activity, so it is great for public health,” she said.

Bike To Work Week wraps up Sunday June 2.
