Support ‘overwhelming’ for RCMP Appreciation Day

May 22, 2019 | 6:03 AM

A local movement to proclaim Feb. 1, as RCMP Appreciation Day has garnered significant momentum across the province.

Martin Von Holst says the committee received over 1000 petitions from people in support of the proclamation.

Eighteen provincial MLA’s, seven MP’s and 37 communities provided a letter of support for the initiative including the City of Vernon, Dawson Creek, Williams Lake, and the Town of Osoyoos.

“One of the most critical things for us is that we have a safe, comfortable, predictable, community and huge piece of that is the role that our policing plays,” said Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming.

MLA Eric Foster presented the petition to the legislature on behalf of the committee and then initiated a private members’ bill asking the province to proclaim Feb. 1, as RCMP Appreciation Day.

“When I announced my bill in the house their was applause from all sides of the house, so I am optimistic that we are going to be able to see this initiative through.” he said.

The decision to make RCMP Appreciation Day a reality, lies in the hands of  Solicitor General Mike Farnworth.

In a letter to the committee on April 10, Farmworth writes;

” I appreciate your committee’s support and efforts on this initiative. You may also be interested to know that the RCMP have an annual recognition for when they came into existence, formerly as Royal Northwest Mounted Police on May 23, 1873″ he stated.

MLA Eric Foster is expected to meet with the Solicter General in the coming weeks.

“He obviously is thinking about this . I have a meeting with him next week to discuss two or three things and that’s on my agenda,” he said.
