Investigation Looks Into High Gas Prices

Investigation looks into high gas prices

Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson says summer will be over by the time Premier John Horgan’s gas price review is done, leaving drivers to pay the price.

“He has promised action for a year and is delaying once again,” said Wilkinson, the Opposition Leader,  on Twitter.

The premier has asked the B.C. Utilities Commission to investigate what is driving high, volatile fuel prices across the province.

The probe — which has to be done by the end of August — will look into whether price fixing and gouging are behind the high cost at the pump, as well as examining the differences in refining margins between B.C. and the rest of the country.

“The rapid increase in gas prices in B.C. is alarming, increasingly out of line with the rest of Canada, and people in B.C. deserve answers,” says Horgan. “We asked the BCUC to conduct a fair, transparent and comprehensive independent investigation. These terms provide the broad reach it needs to find answers and give recommendations to inform the path forward.”

“High and wildly fluctuating gas prices in B.C. are hurting people and B.C.’s economy,” says Bruce Ralston, Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology. “Speculation and misinformation will not lead to solutions. The BCUC is a respected independent regulator and the appropriate body to investigate gas prices in the best interest of British Columbians. We look forward to the report and recommendations.”
