Holland Becomes Oilers GM

Oilers Confirm Holland as New GM

May 7, 2019 | 9:29 AM

Ken Holland is now officially the new general manager and president of hockey operations of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers introduced the 63 year old Vernon native at a media conference at Rogers Place Tuesday.

Holland leaves the Detroit Red Wings organization after 36 years, 22 as their GM, and during his tenure, the Red Wings won four Stanley Cups.

Holland will have to make some tough decisions with Edmonton, a team with superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but one that has made the playoffs just once since reaching the Stanley Cup final in 2006.

Holland announced Tuesday Ken Hitchcock will not be back as head coach, with a search on for a new bench boss.

Holland was named the Red Wings senior vice president in April after the team hired Steve Yzerman as general manager.

Sportsnet and TSN say the 63 year old Vernon native is getting a 5 year deal worth 5 million dollars per season.

Holland has been with the Detroit Red Wings organization for 36 years, including 22 years as their GM.

Holland was moved to the role of senior vice president with the Red Wings last month after the hiring of Steve Yzerman as GM.

The Oilers are expected to confirm the hiring later today.
