Tigers Rebuilding, Need More Players

Tigers Rebuilding, Need More Players

Apr 22, 2019 | 2:02 PM

Senior lacrosse is undergoing a revival in Vernon — but more players are needed to ensure it’s a success.

The Vernon Tigers have fielded a team for the first time since 2012, joining the Armstrong Shamrocks, Kelowna Raiders and Kamloops Rattlers in the Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League.

Brennan Plante, who is also a lacrosse player, is trying to resurrect the Tigers who he says have been dormant for several years due to a lack of players

He says it’s been difficult getting team members, noting they had about 14 players for a recent pre-season tournament.

“It was the first time most of us have played together, and for lots of guys it was their first game in six or more years. It was definitely slow going, but there was huge improvement from the first to second game. We have lots of talented guys, so I’m expecting we will be competitive this year,” Plante tells Beach Radio News.

Plante, who’s family runs Gilbert Parts Depot in Armstrong, Enderby and Lumby, says the team practices once a week and games are on Fridays at 8 p.m. with Kal Tire Place used for their homes games.

He says they are looking for players 22 years and older.

“There’s only eight regular season games this year as the league is kind of reestablishing itself, so hopefully in the year upcoming we can bump that up to 10, 12 or 15 games. And then were doing a one weekend double elimination playoff tournament in mid July,” adds Plante.

Plante says the average age of the Tigers roster so far around 30 years old, and it would help to have a few younger ones.

“We’re still looking for guys. There is lots of guys still on the fence, so if any of them would like to come out and play, we would love to have you — even if they have minimum experience.”

The Tigers coach is James Hurst.

Their first home game will be Friday May 3rd against the Armstrong Shamrocks.
