Yzerman Takes Over For Holland As Red Wings GM

Vernon native Ken Holland has moved into a new role with the Detroit Red Wings to allow a Red Wings legend to take over running the team.

The Red Wings have introduced Steve Yzerman as their new general manager — not that he needs any introduction to Detroit.

The Hockey Hall of Fame centre spent his entire 22-year playing career with the Red Wings, winning three Stanley Cups, and serving as captain from 1986 to 2006.

The 53 year old Yzerman stepped down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning prior to this season and moved into a new role as senior adviser to the general manager in September.

Holland, who has been the team’s GM since 1997,  will remain with the team as senior vice president.

Holland has also reportedly been contacted by other teams including the Edmonton Oilers and the Seattle expansion franchise.

Holland has been one of the most respected managers in the game, and during his 22 years as GM, the Red Wings have won three Stanley Cups.

No doubt Yzerman wants Holland to remain with the Red Wings. He and Holland are very close. However, sources say Holland has been contacted by other teams, including Edmonton and Seattle.
