Club Hosts Canada/US Cup Races

Dec 3, 2018 | 1:16 PM

Hundreds of cross country skiers will be coming to the Vernon area this weekend  — some of them are already here.

The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club will be hosting the Haywood NorAm Super Tour races Saturday and Sunday with over 500 athletes.

Many of the teams from across Canada and the US have already arrived to prepare for the event.

The competition, which Sovereign Lake has hosted many times before, requires a lot of volunteers.

“This event has become embedded in the culture of our club which has made it easy to host year after year as members step up to help out,” says Organizing Committee (OC) Chair, Pat Pearce. “Our members look forward to this opportunity to participate.”

For most of these athletes, these are the first races of the season before heading to Canmore next.

Sovereign Lake’s General Manager, Troy Hudson, believes it is important to give back to the greater cross-country ski community.

He says many teams have been using their facility since they opened November 5th.

“We are able to support our regional clubs until they receive their own snow due to our high elevation,” explains Hudson. “Last month we sold a record number of day tickets and we’re lucky that visitors think of us as their early season training grounds.

The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club says it’s the largest cross-country ski and snowshoe club in North America with almost 2000 members.
