One of Vernon’s best known buildings will soon be gone.
Demolition of the Civic Arena is underway, with crews working to take down the south side of the building first.
Work has been ongoing for several weeks by a contracted firm to remove items inside the 80 year old building.
City spokesperson Nick Nilsen told Beach Radio News back in September, as much of the inside items as possible would be salvaged, and used elsewhere.
“Some of the things would include the boards and the clock. The clock is being re-purposed. We’re going to shuffle it to the Priest Valley Arena. The boards will be going to Coldstream to be re-purposed for the lacrosse box there,” said Nilsen.
Memorabilia from the arena, which opened in 1938, will go to the museum, with some used in a display at the new Kal Tire North Arena.
The new city council, that is being elected today, will make a decision on what the land will be used for, with suggestions of turning it into a park, or using it for a public facility.
