Backyard Bee Keeping

Vernon could be buzzing with more bees in the future.

Council is supporting bylaw changes to allow bee keeping in single and two family residential districts, and in agricultural and commercial districts.

Councillor Brian Quiring says an argument could be made for allowing bees on the rooftops of apartments .

“I know in Vancouver I see beehives on the top of buildings in the downtown. I think that everybody’s moving to rooftop gardens.”

The idea to allow bee keeping in more areas of the city came from resident Dawn Tucker who says it helps pollinate flowers and benefits crops.
