Nominations Needed For Tim Hortons Sports Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the 25th Annual Tim Hortons North Okanagan Athlete, Team and Leadership Awards.

The awards will be presented Tuesday, May 29 at 6 pm at the Lakers Clubhouse at 7000 Cummins Road in Vernon.

The Athlete of the Year trophy has been handed out since 1994, when the first recipient was NHL forward Brent Gilchrist.

Last year, Athlete of the Year was awarded to cross country runner Hannah Bennison of VSS, who won her third provincial title.

The Team of the Year trophy started in 1996, with the first one going to the Vernon Vipers who won the Royal Bank Cup.

The VSS Panthers football team, the first Interior team in 20 years to make it to the provincial finals, was named team of the year for 2016-17.

The Leadership in Sports award honours community leaders such as coaches or organizers.

Last year, Ian Gibson was presented with the Leadership award for his many years of service to boxing and soccer.

“We’re looking forward to a large number of nominations again this year,” says new committee chair Jack Gilroy. “This area certainly is well represented with some outstanding athletes, teams and leaders in sport and we look forward to recognizing them.”

The nomination deadline is Friday, May 18th.
