Vipers Defeat Chiefs 4-1

Feb 8, 2018 | 2:26 AM

The Viper powerplay scored three times in the second period and Anthony Yamnitsky stopped 28 of 29 shots to propel the Vipers to a 4-1 win over the RBC Cup host Chilliwack Chiefs.

Lots of pace in the first period and just a handful of stoppages in the opening half of the period as both teams skated hard and battled for every inch. The Chiefs put pucks at the goal from all angles forcing Anthony Yamnitsky to be sharp. The Vipers opened the scoring as Jimmy Lambert found Michael Young at the right point and his shot found its way through a maze of bodies to give the Vipers a 1-0 lead.

The Vipers ended up on a 5 on 3 a minute into that powerplay and Cameron Trott showcased his power with a rocket from the left circle to make it 2-1. The Chiefs nearly tied it as Will Calverley was awarded a penalty shot, but Anthony Yamnitsky thwarted the chance to keep it 2-1. Still on the 5 minute major, the Vipers would find themselves on another 5 on 3 and again it was Trott, but this time setting up Brett Stapley at the side of the net for his 21st of the year to make it 3-1 Vernon. The Chiefs pushed back, but a later Viper powerplay saw Brett Stapley tap in his second of the night to give the Vipers a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.

The final horn sounded and the Vipers would skate off with a solid 4-1 win. The Vipers will finish their three game homestand on Friday night when Langley comes to town.
