RDNO Committee Seeks Conservation Fund

Jan 8, 2018 | 8:08 AM

Members of the RDNO’s Electoral Advisory Committee are recommending the district set up a Conservation Fund.

Committee Chair Herman Halvorson says they’re sending a report to staff asking they look at the idea.

“We’d like to start a conservation fund where we could deal with situations like garbage in the bush or cleanup – things that are relevant to conservation.”

Currently, money comes out of a discretionary fund or other budget to handle that kind expense.

“We went up and cleaned up Hidden Lake here some time ago and a lot of residents just went up and did it out of the goodness of their heart, like the Lions Club and stuff like that.”

Halvorson says he personally paid for the removal of a couple of car bodies while the Ministry of Environment came out and cleaned up the garbage.

He says the money could go to cleaning up garbage sites, creek restoration or anything conservation related.

“We also pay for conservation officers on the river. Maybe we could use that fund for that too because we put extra money into that because the Ministry of Environment don’t cover everything.”

The committee didn’t come up with a set amount of money they feel that fund should contain.

Halvorson hopes staff can come back with a report in February.
