Team Canada…Heart of Gold

Jan 6, 2018 | 8:59 AM

Team Canada has that Gold medal they had their sights set on ever since they lost in a shoot-out last year.

The World Junior Championship was reclaimed by Canada defeating Sweden 3-1 last night.

Kelowna Rocket Dillon Dube opened the scoring for the Canadians in the first period.

The game was knotted up at 1 until just under two minutes of play left in regulation time.

Swift Current Broncos forward Tyler Steenbergen tipped home a shot from the point late in the game, to give Canada a 2-1 lead with very little time left.

Sweden pulled their goaltender looking to tie it up, then Canada popped in an empty-netter to secure a 3-1 victory and the Gold hardware waiting at the end.

Carter Hart stopped 35 shots in Canada’s net.

Some say you never really win a Silver medal…you lose the Gold.

Sweden captain Lias Andersson, wanted nothing to do with the silver medal that was draped around his neck, so he tossed it into the stands towards a fan wearing a Rochester Americans jersey.

Moments later the man then removed the Rochester jersey…and he was wearing a Sweden jersey underneath.

Andersson confirmed to media during a post game interview, that he threw it away because he simply didn’t want to keep it…that the fan wanted it more than he did and he’s taken more than a few social media criticisms over the move.

The win is Canada’s 17th gold medal at the World Juniors.
