Enderby Mayor Wants Highway Improvements

Jan 2, 2018 | 8:29 AM

The Mayor of Enderby says it’s time the provincial government do something about the bottleneck that’s created in the city as traffic grows.

Greg McCune says the crunch on Highway 97A is only going to get worse with the Trans-Canada Highway improvements that are going to happen.

“We’ve had numerous discussions with the provincial government. We’re looking at solutions. We’ve presented solutions to them. I think probably six or seven straight years at the UBCM. I think we’re all on the same page.”

Pressure is on to continue four-laning the highway, which can’t be done through the city.

“No, there just isn’t enough room for that. I think the twinning of it, with the acquisition of the rail right-of-way, I think there’s an opportunity there to have two lanes southbound where the highway currently exists and two lanes northbound on that right-of-way.”

McCune says the feeling of the government is there would be no, more cost effective piece of highway built because there is no need to acquire land.

McCune there are other initiatives that could be included.

“As far as the highway traffic, we’ve talked about roundabouts. Sicamous just did that roundabout on basically on the Trans-Canada that funnels people through. It’s been very successful. I can see that happening in Enderby.”

McCune says data is still being compiled from a traffic study done in the fall.

He says the government has traffic in the region is already at 2025 levels so it knows something has to be done.

The District of Spallumcheen has also been lobbying the government to get improvements.
