‘Mission’ Accomplished For Kindness Meters

Dec 19, 2017 | 5:17 PM

Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund presents cheque for $1,800 to Lisa Anderson of the Upper Room Mission. The money comes from donations made in 2017 to the city’s kindness meters.

The kindness of local residents has been passed onto one of Vernon’s leading social agencies.

The City of Vernon has given the Upper Room Mission 18-hundred dollars  — from donations made to the ‘kindness meters’ this year.

Co-executive director Lisa Anderson says every little bit helps.

“We feel so blessed that the City of Vernon chose us this year. These funds will help us continue to do the work we do to serve the less fortunate in the community.”

Anderson says this is an important time of year for them.

“We’re a little extra busy with the snow, and Christmas can be a hard time for people, so for us to be able to be open and provide the services, it means a lot to people.”

The Mission will hold its Christmas Eve dinner on Friday at 4 pm, when they also hand out its Christmas backpacks.

The city put-up five kindness meters last year to give people a way to help local charities, instead of giving to panhandlers.

“Last year we gave to the Salvation Army, and this year, council thought we would give to the Upper Room Mission,” says Mayor Akbal Mund. “Both groups support and feed the residents who are less fortunate. We believe it’s the right thing to do. The kindness meters are basically doing a good deed for our community.”
