Salvation Army Hands Out Christmas Hampers

Dec 18, 2017 | 7:19 AM

There will be lots of smiles and happy people at Vernon’s Salvation Army the next few days.

The social agency starts handing-out its Christmas hampers and toys to people and families in need today.

Lieutenant Stefan Reid says it’s the culmination of everything they do.

“It’s our most favourite time to be the Salvation Arm food bank in Vernon, and we can’t thank the community enough for their support.”

Reid says they use proceeds from their kettle campaign for the hampers, while donations to Beach Radio’s Santa Toy Club are used to provide the gifts.

“We really see what the community can do in just three short days, for us to be able to give out the gift cards and gifts this year.”

In past year’s recipients have received a turkey and complete Christmas dinner, but this year, they get a gift card from Save On Foods to be able to buy everything they need.

Reid says that gives people more choice with what they eat, and allows them to manage any food allergies.

Reid says they try not to miss anyone that needs a hamper.

“People have been coming in, but because we had to order the gift cards we had to have some sort of a cut-off, but if people truly need help, they can always come and see us regardless .:”

About 500 of the gift card hampers will be giving-out, about the same number as last year.
