Cyclist Injured In Vernon Accident

A 43 year old old Vernon man is in hospital after being struck by a pickup truck on Highway 6 at 27th Street this morning while riding his bicycle.

The accident occurred just before 7:30.

Police say the man had just entered the intersection when he was struck.

The man was trapped underneath a Dodge pickup truck until emergency crews could get him out.

The driver of the pickup was not injured.

RCMP Cst. Kelly Brett says it appears the motorist was not to blame.

“The investigation is ongoing, but at this time, witness reports are that the cyclist entered the intersection on a green light when the driver had the right of way,” Brett tells Beach Radio.

Brett says  motorists are having to pay extra special attention during the early morning and afternoon drive times.

“With the winter road conditions, such as ice and snow, RCMP are reminding pedestrians and cyclists to follow the rules of the road and to cross at well light cross walks or intersections. With cooler temperatures arriving icy road conditions are prevalent, thus making it harder for drivers to react and stop quickly.”
