Meningitis Clinics Set 15 to 19 Year Olds

Dec 15, 2017 | 2:17 PM

Interior Health has announced public clinics to allow 15 to 19 year olds in the Okanagan to get a shot to prevent meningitis.

An outbreak has been declared due to higher than normal cases in the region this year, including one in Coldstream.

The recent cases have all be in that age range.

“Any age group can be at risk for this, but what we’ve seen is there is certain populations that are at higher risk,” says I-H medical health officer Dr. Karin Goodison.

She says a drop-in clinic will be held Saturday from noon to 5 pm at the Vernon Health Unit at 1440-14th  Avenue….and in Kelowna at the Community Health Centre on Doyle Avenue  from 10 to 1pm.

“We are really hoping people will come out and get immunized because this is an essential step in protecting yourself from getting meningococcol disease,” says Goodison.

The vaccine has been offered to grade nine students in BC since 2016, and anyone who has received it this school year, doesn’t need to be
re-immunized.

I-H is also holding school clinics over the next while before the Christmas break.
