Housing Complex Attracts Big Crowd

Lumby Council was full Monday night as residents wanted to see if council was going to approve a Development Variance Permit for a housing complex on Mountainview Avenue.

The proposal is for four duplexes with three bedroom units upstairs, and one bedroom units downstairs.

Mayor Kevin Acton says there is some opposition in the area, but it’s the kind of housing Lumby needs.

“Wanting mixed use in our community. We don’t want to create slums. We want people of different financial means to be able live throughout the community and not put people down but bring them up. So council voted unanimously to support it, Acton tells Kiss FM.

Neighbours were concerned about the number and type of of units proposed for the size of the property, as well as parking and yard setbacks.

Acton thinks it was clear council needed to approve it.

“It looked like a lot of considerations. Unfortunately when you’re not in government and you don’t see it every day, it looks massive. So to the community, it looked like all these huge massive things were being done.”

Acton says other than this project, there hasn’t been a lot of talk in the community expressing concerns.

But he wants to hear from people.

“I really encourage people. If they truly feel their neighbourhood isn’t suitable for mixed use to come down and talk to us because council has done a lot of research on this, and we feel that mixed use is the best way to create a livable community.”

Acton says more public consultations will be done on Lumby’s housing plans.

Those plans include carriage houses, laneway housing increased densification to keeping the community walkable and affordable ground level suites for seniors.
