Family Left Homeless After Fire

A family has been displaced from their home in Lake Country due to a fire.

Fire chief Steve Windsor says it broke out in the basement of a home on Allison Road around midnight

“There was four people at home and some animals. They heard a noise in the basement — there’s a couple of bedrooms down there — and saw smoke coming up through some of the floor vents, so they managed to evacuate,” Windsor tells Kiss FM.

One cat is still missing.

Windsor says the damage is “pretty extensive,” and the family is being cared for by emergency social services.

“The fire was quite stubborn. It got into some of the wall cavities in the basement and the floor started getting fairly weak, so we had to be careful with our crews, but we managed to get it out.”

Windsor says it doesn’t appear suspicious as they continue to investigate the cause.

“We’re looking at a number of different potential causes. It could have been electrical. It could be a furnace.”
