Lazar Dealt To Flames

A Vernon hockey product is moving closer to home after being traded on NHL trade deadline day.

The Ottawa Senators packaged forward Curtis Lazar and defenceman Mike Kostka in a deal to the Calgary Flames, in exchange for defenceman Jyrki Jokipakka and a second round pick.

The 22 year old Lazar was a first round draft pick of the Senators, 17th overall, in 2013.

He had just one assist in 33 games for the Sens this season, and had a plus-minus of -10.

Lazar says he had asked the team to consider moving him.

“It was a pretty frustrating season for myself. That started with coming into camp with mononucleosis. I never really got the chance to catch my stride. I’ve kind of been playing catch-up all season, so I’m very appreciative of the Senators organization and I cant wait to get to Calgary,” Lazar told TSN.

Lazar played his junior hockey in Alberta with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

“I’m very familiar with a coach there, Dave Cameron, from his time in Ottawa, and a few other players as well, especially Alex Chiasson,” added Lazar, who spends his off-seasons in Kelowna.

Lazar told TSN he was packaging up his dog to go to the dog sitter, and was getting ready to join the Flames.
