Red, White & Maple Leafs

Vernon Winter Carnival runs the next ten days with close to 100 events — and lots of red and white.

Chairperson Deb White says everyone is excited about ‘Canada Celebrates 150’ as this year’s theme.

“We’re getting lots of calls in the office from out of town people about the balloons, the parade and a lot for the events. We actually have five events that are sold out.

The sold out events include Suds and Cider, History Trivia, Unwind Downtown, Pinot & Paint, and the Grandparents-Grandchild dance.

White says the theme for the 57th annual mid-winter festival will be fun.

“I just saw a posting on Facebook. They want to know if anyone has got a beaver, a moose or a Mountie outfit that they could borrow because they have to dress up for Winter Carnival at work.”

White says Saturday’s parade, which starts at noon, will have 116 entries.

“There are a lot more animal entries, and a lot more bands.”

White says the expected snow on Saturday shouldn’t impact the parade, which usually draws thousands of people.

“No I don’t think so. We’ve talked to the city and they’re going to make sure it’s all clean,” adds White. a local business owner who is in her second year as chair of the board of directors.
