New Snow Needed for Snow Pack

Feb 3, 2017 | 11:37 AM

Snow this weekend in the forecast is good news for the various water districts in the North Okanagan.
The current reservoir levels in the Greater Vernon system are above normal…but the snow pack needs help according to Jennifer Miles from the Regional District North Okanagan.
“As of right now it seems we are a little bit lower in some of our snow pack reading areas, but not much off what our average is.”
Greater Vernon Water system reservoirs are normal or slightly above right now, but Miles says more is always good.
“Because we have had years when we’ve had a really good snow pack but somehow that water either somehow goes through the ground or evaporates on us due to a warm spring and then we don’t have that water supply to get us through the summer.”
Miles says things look good right now, but that could change quickly without spring rains.
“We really want to encourage the homeowners out there to be water wise and make sure they are using water wisely so we are not seeing a lack of supply in the area later in the year.”
Miles says without more snow now, we will need lots of rain this spring to ensure solid levels throughout the summer.
