Canada Carnival Set To Roll

The excitement is building for the 57th annual Vernon Winter Carnival.

The event that will celebrate Canada’s 150th will feature close to 100 events over ten days.

The new Queen Silver Star will be chosen Thursday night.

Chair Deb White says tickets are going fast so if you have an eye on a particular event you are urged to grab tickets as soon as possible

“Suds and Cider, Grandparents Grandchild dance, pinot and paint, history trivia, and unwind downtown are now sold out. Long-time favorites, Irish Pub night and medieval carnival have limited tickets left as well as the dances,” says White.

White says local entertainer, Shawn Lightfoot, will perform at the Jopo luncheon Vernon Lodge. February 9 and 10.

“Don’t forget to buy your carnival button! You don’t want to get caught without one by a carnival cop. Jopo Raffle tickets are on sale now with the grand prize of a house boat vacation,” adds White.

You could also win $1000 and a $500 shopping spree, Roots and Blues festival package, and a package from the Vernon Vipers, with tickets selling for $2.

Meantime, the City of Vernon is advising drivers to be aware of road closures for the parade which starts at noon Saturday, February 4.

The parade route and staging areas will remain closed to all traffic from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Drivers are encouraged to use Hwy 97 (32 Street) for north-south travel or use alternate routes if travelling downtown.

Staging areas for the parade are between 29 and 43 Avenues, and 27 and 31 Streets. The parade route starts at 43 Avenue and travels southbound on 27 Street, westbound on 30 Avenue, and northbound on 31 Street.

City staff will be located at 35 Avenue and 31 Street location to let emergency vehicles cross.
