Hometown hockey was a big hit in Vernon.

The two day festival attracted thousands of people by City Hall, and culminated with a national broadcast on Sportsnet Sunday.

Red Wings G-M Ken Holland and hockey pioneer Larry Kwong were among the Vernon residents featured on the show.

Mayor Akbal Mund says it was a great event.
“I think by the number of people who came down today and Saturday, I think it’s been very successful. I haven’t heard anything bad from the organizing committee. People were enjoying the events,” Mund told Kiss FM.

Mund says he would like to see the city try for more events in the future.

“For an event like this to get into your community, it’s very important, and it puts you on the map.”

Mund was amazed at how much show host Ron MacLean knew about Vernon.

“He asked me if I could get him a number 6 combo (Mund used to own the Wendy’s restaurant in the city). I told if he wanted a spicy chicken combo I could get him one. He does his homework. It’s amazing,” adds Mund.

Kirk McLean, Russ Courtnall, and Brent Gilchrist were among the former NHL’ers who took part in the activities Sunday.
