Savings have been found in the construction of Vernon’s new recreation hub.

A progress report on the construction of the Active Living Centre said the project was moving along on schedule and under budget, as savings were found during the design and procurement phases.

With the savings, the city will be able to re-invest them into items on its wish list, including indirect lighting to the 50 metre pool and leisure pool areas, upgrades to the battery-operated version of the WOW WaveBall, and upgrades to the security camera system.

Interior Health approved the construction of six pools within the ALC in October, and the report said crews have nearly completed pouring the foundation for the 50m pool, leisure pool, and other key areas as of Dec. 9. The concrete stair towers had also been built and work had started ion the concrete elevator shafts.

Looking ahead to the next three months, work will be focused on completing the interior design; finalizing the coordination of all building systems; and integrating the architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical systems.

Fabrication of the building’s superstructure had also been completed, and mass timber and structural steel will be delivered in mid-December, then erected in January.

The City of Vernon noted public engagement had been plentiful and mostly positive, and next steps will involve incorporating input into the design elements of the facility, including Syilx First Nation features.

The city also opened it’s sponsorship and naming rights opportunities for the ALC, and those interested in naming rights can find more information online.
